2007-2008 CLASS DESCRIPTION

 

Kindergarten

Sunday class from 9:30-12:00

Student age 5 by September 1.

A series of booklets will help students learn about Shabbat and holidays (home celebration). My first learn and do Jewish holiday book will teach basic Hebrew holiday vocabulary; students will make “my Jewish book” to record what they have learned; storybooks will be used to reinforce various holiday traditions; a Hebrew specialist will introduce the Hebrew Aleph Bet weekly. Bible: The Creation/Adam and Eve, Noah and Moses. Lots of crafts, music and games.

First Grade

Sunday class from 9:30-12:00

Student age 6 by September 1.

Discovering God, Jewish Symbols and Holidays (Temple celebration), learning the Aleph Bet with 2 vowels, bible stories: review Creation and Noah, Tower of Babel, Abraham and Sarah. Lots of crafts, music and games.

Second Grade

Sunday class from 9:30-12:00

Student age 7 by September 1.

Coordinating with secular school grade

Discovering Mitzvot and Exploring Jewish identity, URJ Chai Curriculum: Learning for Jewish Life: The Torah is About Me, Getting to Know God, I can Do G’milut Chasadim (deeds of loving kindness) lots of crafts, music, games. Beginning Hebrew reading (words with one syllabus) .

Third Grade

Sunday class from 9:30-12:00

Student age 8 by September 1.

Coordinating with secular school grade

Being a Mentsch, Living a Life of Holiness, Ways we experience God and Taking responsibility for G’milut Chasadim (deeds of loving kindness) trough the Bible stories, holiday customs and symbols. Bible: the Patriarchal and Matriarchal stories, Moses and the exodus,.Shalom Uv’racha, interactive Hebrew-Reading meaningful words from the Siddur and using them in our daily life.

Fourth Grade

Sunday class from 9:00-11:30

Wednesday Hebrew from 4:30-6:00

Student age 9 by September 1.

Coordinating with secular school grade

God concepts in relation to weekly Torah portion, 10 commandments, Learn the significance and structure of communal prayer, and acts of G’milut Chasadim (loving kindness) affecting relationships. Hebrew: Learning the Hebrew prayers and Friday night service, Shalom Uvracha interactive Hebrew.

Fifth Grade

Sunday class from 9:30-12:00

Wednesday Hebrew from 4:30-6:00 Student age 10 by September 1.

Coordinating with secular school grade

Biblical units from the Prophets and Writings regarding moral and ethical principles.

Holiday Customs and Symbols;

Jewish life cycle events.

Prayer: What Is It? Why? and How Do We Do It? Review of Blessings Associated with Holiday Worship.

 

 

 

Sixth Grade

Sunday class from 9:30-12:00

Wednesday Hebrew from 4:30-6:00

Understanding God and the Jewish people throughout Jewish history.

Study History from Abraham to the sages. It is an introduction designed to provide a transition from childhood bible tales for a purposeful and rewarding study of the Jewish past.

The land and the people of Israel

Focus on Rosh Ha-Shanah and Yom Kippur

Origins, History, Vocabulary, Concepts of Holidays and Relevance to Contemporary Life

The Amidah and the Torah Service.

Special B’nei Mitzva class (on Wednesdays)

 

Midrasha – 7th-9th grade.

This program is designed to develop critical thinking about Jewish topics.

 

Applying Judaism to everyday life and learning how being an active Jew enhances life.

 

Love, sex, marriage and intermarriage (what is love, how does one pick a partner? Does the Torah approve of wedding between a Jew and non-Jew? Does the Torah say anything about sex before marriage? Stress and suicide.

Jewish identity (Why Judaism is special? What is the basis of Judaism? Who is considered a good Jew? Do we have to believe in God? Can a Jew be a Jew without worshiping? Is Judaism a nationality or a religion??)

Middle East conflict.

 

Theology with the Rabbi - Rabbi will  analyze with the students selected biblical texts and rituals to see how they correlate with what we perceive Judaism to stand for. Rabbi will also prepare them for the Confirmation service.
